Laser engraved tables

Sussex Yacht Club commission

When the Sussex Yacht Club recently had to move from their much loved premises, a former sail loft built in the mid 19th century, I was commissioned to make seven coffee tables for the new clubhouse lounge using some of the flooring from the original building. The floorboards had been heavily patinated from the building’s 170 years of use and the club members were very keen for me to keep the essence of this look as a rememberance.

To connect the old and new buildings beyond the wood alone I made sketches of yachts that were particularly associated with the club and had them engraved by laser onto the table’s tops. This was the first time I had used this process and given its success with the club’s members I think it’s fair to say it has a future in my work.

The table is made from Sapele recovered from an old front door and Ash rescued from the burn pile at a local stilt maker’s.
